Purple Saxifrage
Saxifraga oppositifolia
Also known as Purple Mountain Saxifrage, Mountain Purple Saxifrage
Key benefits
✦Traditional uses
✦Purple saxifrage was one of the very first green, living things to appear on the tundra each year, and to the peoples who lived there, that mattered enormously. Inuit, Sami, and other circumpolar communities gathered its tart young leaves and flowers as a fresh bite of vitamin C after long, dark winters without any greenery at all, and it has traditionally been credited with helping polar travelers ward off scurvy when no other fresh food could be found. Its cheerful magenta flowers, often opening through a crust of retreating snow, made it a welcome sign that spring had truly arrived. It remains the official floral emblem of Nunavut, Canada, a mark of how deeply this small, tough plant is woven into northern life.

“For the first bright, tart proof that spring has reached even the harshest edge of the map.”
Purple saxifrage holds the record as one of the northernmost-flowering plants on Earth, found blooming on Ellesmere Island and Svalbard within a few hundred miles of the North Pole, often the only splash of color for miles across the bare rock.
Purple saxifrage isn't known to be toxic and has long been eaten fresh by Arctic peoples, but like many Saxifragaceae it contains some oxalates, so people with a history of kidney stones should treat it as an occasional nibble rather than a regular food. It also grows slowly and is protected in parts of its range, so forage only where it's abundant and legal.
