✦Senna's story runs along the Nile and out into the caravan routes of the old Arab trading world, where its dried leaves and curved pods were bundled and shipped north through the port city of Alexandria, the city that eventually lent the plant its name. Long before it reached European apothecary shelves, senna was already a fixture of traditional Arabian and Unani medicine, prized as one of the most dependable plants for moving a sluggish bowel. Physicians and herbalists across the medieval Islamic world documented it extensively, and it traveled onward into European herbal tradition as one of the few laxative herbs considered reliable enough to standardize and trade internationally. Today it remains one of the most recognized botanical laxatives in the world, still harvested largely from the same hot, dry landscapes where it has always grown best.

Alexandrian senna was never actually native to Alexandria. It grew wild along the Nile in Sudan and Nubia, but for centuries the only way it reached the wider world was through Alexandria's bustling port, and traders simply started calling it by the city's name.
Senna is a stimulant laxative meant for occasional, short-term use only; overuse can cause cramping, dependency, and electrolyte loss. Avoid it during pregnancy, in young children, and with intestinal obstruction or inflammatory bowel disease, and be cautious combining it with heart medications like digoxin or with diuretics, since electrolyte shifts can amplify their effects.
